Students to lecture booksellers and publishers
Industry receives extra tuition on academic bookselling at annual aps conference
Exploring innovative resource provisions for students will be high on the agenda at this year’s Academic, Professional and Specialist Bookselling (APS) Group Conference.
University students and lecturers from Sussex, Brighton and Plymouth universities will join academic booksellers and publishers for the two day conference at The Old Ship Hotel in Brighton on Wednesday 13th March.
The conference will open on Wednesday 13th March with a Keynote Address by Professor Christopher F. Higgins, Vice-Chancellor and Warden, Durham University. This will be followed by two separate sessions chaired by Oliver Gadsby, CEO of Rowman & Littlefield, during which students and lecturers will each reveal the impact that increased university fees and the rise of the digital textbook has had on book borrowing and purchasing habits over the past year. This valuable insight will help to inform discussions for the conference the following day (14), chaired by Dr Mark Kerrigan, Senior Lecturer in Education, Physiology and Anatomy and Programme Leader, Educational Development Unit, Greenwich University.

“The APS conference offers an increasingly important forum for publishers and booksellers to hear first-hand from students and lecturers about the rapidly changing academic market including changes in behaviour and expectation. This will be facilitated by a great line up of key note speakers, the hugely successful student panel which is back for a third year running and a new lecturer panel debate introduced by popular demand this year.”
The morning will be dedicated to assessing the needs of students and the role of the publishing industry in their studies. Discussions will begin in the form of a bookseller panel session on building relationships with the customer, chaired by Chris Bennett. Panellists include Damian Duggan, Language Books Online; Peter Gray, Chairman and CEO, John Smith Booksellers; Patrick Neale, Proprietor Jaffé Books; and Margaret Janes, Manager, Waterstones campus bookshop, UEA.
David Pattern, Library Systems Manager at Huddersfield University, will go on to make the case for book buying as an important contributing factor to student success, through research that proves a direct link between the two. This will be followed by the results of Bowker Market Research’s Student Use of Resources Survey 2012 showing a break-through in e-books, presented by the managing director, Jo Henry.
Dr Philip Gee, Programme Director for Undergraduate Psychology, Plymouth University, will kick off the afternoon session dedicated to exploring innovative ways of acquiring, monitoring and selling student resources. He will discuss the initiative he launched at Plymouth University to provide every first year psychology student with core texts.
Dr Mark Kerrigan will share his knowledge and experience on what students say and do about learning resources, and Marin Seeley Manager of Waterstones, Gower Street will co-ordinate a session in which delegates will be invited to share their top wishes for 2013.

The APS Annual awards ceremony and dinner, rewarding the best in academic bookselling and publishing will be held on the Wednesday night of the Conference.
The Conference will conclude with the Booksellers Association AGM.
