Philip Pullman and Lord Harries debate religion, Jesus and politics
Last night, Lord Richard Harries, former Bishop of Oxford and author of Faith in Politics? went head to head with renowned atheist Phillip Pullman to discuss the dual nature of Jesus Christ in the wake of Pullman’s most recent, and some say most controversial title, The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ.
The event was organised by English PEN and chaired by English PEN director Jonathan Heawood, and took place at the Free Word Centre in Farringdon.
Both speakers were keen to discuss the gulf between the figures of Jesus and Christ as portrayed in Pullman’s title as well as the role of Christianity in British society, particularly in the run up to the General Election.
Richard Harries’ new book, Faith in Politics? Rediscovering the Christian Roots of Our Political Values, is published by DLT on 22nd April.
