New Literary Prize for Nature & Travel Writing about Britain Launched

Publishers Frances Lincoln, in association with the National Trust, are delighted to announce a new annual literary prize. It seeks to reward the best writing on the general outdoors, nature and UK-based travel writing and is sponsored by Thwaites Brewery, who brew the bestselling golden beer called ‘Wainwright Ale’.

The Thwaites Wainwright Prize for Nature and Travel Writing 2014, in association with the National Trust, can be narrative or illustrated non-fiction and will be open to writers from all over the world, but the resulting books must be focussed on the British countryside. The prize will be awarded to the work which best reflects Wainwright’s core values of inspiring people to explore the outdoors, whilst engendering a love of landscape and respect for nature. A £5,000 prize fund will be presented to the winning book.

The judging panel will be chaired by Dame Fiona Reynolds, current Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge and former Director-General of the National Trust, and will feature representatives from Countryfile Magazine, travel specialist bookseller Stanfords, The Wainwright Society & the National Trust.

Submissions are now open and can be made at To be eligible, books must have been published between 1st January and 31st December 2013. The closing date is 13th January 2014. The shortlist will be announced in April 2014 at The London Book Fair, and shortlisted titles will be included in a nationwide marketing campaign in bookshops and libraries.
