Celebrate your local bookshop during Independent Booksellers Week / 15th – 22nd June
Over 225 local bookshops spanning the country are signed up to take part in Independent Booksellers Week which is being held from 15th to 22nd June.
Organised by the Booksellers Association (BA) – the national trade association for booksellers – Independent Booksellers’ Week is a celebration of the passion and dedication demonstrated by independent bookshops.
Bestselling novelist Kate Mosse, who is acting as a figurehead for Independent Booksellers Week, says, ‘I am delighted to support Independent Booksellers Week for a second year. Independent bookshops provide a cultural hub for many local communities and in my experience are run by people passionate about books and reading, which means so much to me as an author.’
The initiative, which took place for the first time last year, features booksellers demonstrating their flair, creativity and community involvement through in store promotions and events staged throughout the week. Events will range from author talks, children’s storytelling, creative writing workshops, to authors taking a turn behind the tills in “Strictly Come Bookselling”. So far over 180 authors are showing their support for the week including Kate Adie, Christopher Brookmyre, Ian Rankin, Rory Bremner, Meera Syal, Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall, Carol Ann Duffy and Paddy Ashdown.
Independent Booksellers Book Prize
Also launched during the Week will be the Independent Booksellers Book Prize. Votes for the Book Prize will be cast on a shortlist of ten adult and ten children’s books voted for by Booksellers Association members (UK and Ireland) from a longlist derived from sales data that specifically relates to independent bookshops. The public can vote by picking up a postcard from one of the participating independent bookshops or they can email their votes to a dedicated email address: [email protected]
