At the opening of the 2017 Art X Lagos, Tokini Peterside, ART X Lagos Founder & Director said: “As Africa emerges in the wider contemporary art market, ART X Lagos is an art fair that provides an understanding of Africa’s varied artistic productions, while enabling collectors to access artworks from diverse generations of African artists, who have been defining African visual cultures over the decades. Nigeria has a long tradition of art collecting, dating back to the early twentieth century, and the country was a pioneer in laying down modernity in the arts, bridging ancient art forms with new conceptual ideas and practices. In recent decades, the world has paid increasing attention to contemporary African art, with artists from the continent being included in international art biennales and major exhibitions. African economies are amongst the fastest-growing ones in the world, and artists from the continent are playing a fair role in this growth. ART X Lagos is an African platform for artists, on the African continent – we celebrate artists, art students, scholars, collectors, art professionals and art lovers. We look forward to welcoming the art world to Lagos, one of the most vibrant art scenes in Africa, at the second edition of ART X Lagos which will run from November 3rd to 5th, 2017.”
