What I have tried to do is to present a book which is as entertaining to the eye and the imagination as a Beatles album is to the ear’Alan Aldridge, 1969

Alan Aldridge’s iconic collection The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics is published to coincide with a special UK visit by the now California-based Aldridge. First printed in 1969, The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics became the ultimate piece of fan memorabilia and a lasting tribute to the band who changed a generation.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr worked with Aldridge as he created the book, offering witty quotes and insightful observations to the songs, not least those whose meanings were enigmatic. The words and lyrics from the band are accompanied by Alan’s compilation of imaginative illustrations, creating a work of art in itself.

Alongside his own work, Aldridge commissioned leading contemporary artists, inviting them to choose their favourite Beatles lyrics and accompany them with their own imaginative pictures. David Hockney painted a bed to illustrate ‘I’m So Tired’. Cartoonist Ralph Steadman, most famous for his illustrations of Hunter S Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, provided his striking illustrative interpretations of ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’, ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ and ‘Oh Darling’.

The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics delves deep into the heart of the psychedelic sixties. The collection of artwork enhances 196 classic Beatles songs, including well-loved favourites like ‘Hey Jude’, ‘I Am the Walrus’ and ‘She Loves You’, and includes insightful quotes from the real experts – the band members themselves.

“I’ve never done anything to create what has happened. It creates itself. I’m here because it happened. But I didn’t do anything to make it happen apart from saying ‘Yes’.” Ringo

“The thing is, we’re all really the same person. We’re just four parts of the one.” – Paul
