Making a No. 1 Bestseller: Peter James

One of the UK’s most popular crime and thriller novelists, Peter James’ Roy Grace detective novels have sold over 19 million copies worldwide in total and the series is now published in 37 territories. He has twice been Chair of the Crime Writers’ Association and has won many literary awards, including the CWA Diamond Dagger Award in 2016.  Three of his novels have been made into successful plays and a TV series is in the offing. An established film producer, Peter also holds a number of charitable posts.

Starting with Peter’s brand new Roy Grace series in 2003, we helped Peter to climb the Sunday Times bestseller charts with each novel in the series, achieving a massive jump from no 7 to no 2 in 2009 with Dead Tomorrow.  The following year he went straight in at no 1 after 3 days of sales in 2010 with Dead Like You toppling James Patterson from the top spot.  Peter James has been a consistent Sunday Times no 1 bestseller every year since 2010, knocking 50 Shades of Grey off the No 1 paperback fiction slot in the Autumn of 2012 and in May 2015 You Are Dead went in at no 1 derailing The Girl on The Train’s 15 month domination. For his Roy Grace series alone we have secured 13 Sunday Times No.1s.   In 2016 Peter was no 1 with Love You Dead and 3 weeks later went straight into the top of the non fiction top 10 with his non fiction title Death Comes Knocking written in association with Graham Bartlett, Head of Sussex Police.  Need You Dead was no 1 in paperback for 3 weeks in October 2017 and in the top 10 for 9 weeks and Dead If You Don’t has dominated the top of the bestseller charts for a number of weeks. Peter’s latest Roy Grace, Dead If You Don’t went straight in at No.1 in the Sunday Times bestseller chart after just three days of sales, selling 12,700 copies compared to 3,000 copies for the no 2 slot.   During his Dead If You Don’t book signing tour, Peter signed over 1,400 copies in two days.

Peter has been regularly interviewed on BBC Radio 4 (Front Row, The Today Programme & Saturday Live), BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 5 Live, with broad feature coverage from the Daily Mail to the Sunday Telegraph, with review coverage appearing across the national press and TV appearances on BBC Breakfast, BBC News Channel’s Meet the Author interviewed by Jim Naughtie and London Live TV.  Most recently coverage has included Daily Telegraph, Mail on Sunday, The Sunday Times, Daily Express, Heat, Woman & Home and S Magazine.

Due to the success of his writing, Peter has won and been shortlisted for a number of awards. Awards include the publicly voted ITV3 Crime Thriller Awards People’s Bestseller Dagger and a Wellcome Trust Book Prize shortlist nomination for Perfect People.  As popular internationally as in the UK, he won the US Barry Award for Best British Crime Novel in 2012.  In 2014, Peter was awarded Sainsbury’s eBook of the Year; in 2015 he featured on the CWA Dagger in the Library Award shortlist – as well as being voted by WH Smith readers as The Best Crime Author of All Time.  Peter James was also awarded the CWA Diamond Dagger Award in 2016.
