Making the Headlines: bo.lee Gallery

bo.lee gallery was founded in Bath in 2009 by Director and curator Jemma Hickman. In the past nine years the gallery has flourished, with Founding Director Jemma Hickman attending art fairs internationally, including Hong Kong, New York and Miami. The gallery was opening a new permanent location in Peckham Rye, London, with the exhibition Nature’s Alchemy, featuring twelve artists who use materials such as mud, blood and ash to explore patterns and symbolism found within nature.

For the launch of bo.lee gallery’s new permanent Peckham gallery, Midas was briefed to use the exhibition, Nature’s Alchemy to help raise the profile of the gallery director Jemma Hickman and ensure that the launch and exhibition was covered and well received by art press and mainstream media. As Founder and Director Jemma Hickman had been trading and working for nine years, it was important to position her as an established gallerist and curator. The gallery wanted to highlight the quality of the artists involved in the exhibition, which included Turner Prize winner Richard Long, as well as Jemma’s credentials as a curator and gallerist within the contemporary art scene.

Before the exhibition and gallery launch, Midas PR announced the gallery opening as a news story in order to create a buzz about the new gallery opening in Peckham. We focused on Jemma’s journey from a self-made gallerist who started her first gallery aged 25, to an established curator who has worked with internationally renowned artists, to a gallery owner in London showcasing works by talented mid-career artists and Turner prize winners. We also worked closely with the artists to secure features on the themes and personal ideas behind their work. Finally, we secured regular online listings and previews for the gallery in key online arts media, to ensure maximum footfall the gallery’s inaugural exhibition.

Over the course of a two-month campaign we secured high circulation broadcast and national interviews with Jemma and the artists, focusing on Jemma’s credentials as a gallerist, creating a buzz around a new gallery opening in Peckham, and the quality of the artists exhibiting at the inaugural exhibition Nature’s Alchemy.  Coverage included: Broadcast media: BBC Radio 2: The Arts Show with Jonathan Ross, BBC Radio London: Jo Good, BBC Radio London (News), LBC, London Live Print and digital media: The i newspaper, Londonist, The Resident, FAD Magazine, Living South, Weekender, Royal Society for British Sculptors, Love London Love Culture
