Making the Headlines: British Composer Awards
How do you make contemporary music accessible to a wider audience? Midas PR was tasked with the challenge for this year’s British Composer Awards, presented by BASCA at BFI Southbank on 9 December. The winners of the 13th annual Awards included ten composers across 12 categories spanning Sonic Art, Choral, Amateur or Young Composer and beyond.
The PR campaign was designed to celebrate the diversity of contemporary music and highlighted the stories behind the winning works and their composers. It built anticipation for the announcement of the winners, while also increasing awareness of the awards among music and non-music media by focusing on the unique relationship between music and the wider creative arts. To broaden media interest in the event, Midas simplified the language of contemporary music, and implemented a segmented media relations campaign which tailored content for vertical and regional media.
The result was over 30 pieces of coverage in broadcast, national, regional and trade press, including a live interview with one of London’s winning composers, Sinan Savaskan, on London Live, and coverage in BBC Music Magazine, Music Week, The Herald Scotland, Classical Music, Jazzwise, Opera Now, International Piano, Glasgow’s Evening Times, The Irish Post, London Jazz News, and Bedford Today.
