Life Begins

By Amanda Brookfield

Published July 2008 by Penguin
£18.99, hardback

A rich, emotionally intelligent novel Life Begins is the story of Charlotte, a woman who approaches her 40th birthday with divorce papers in her hand and a fresh future to look forward to with her teenage son, Sam. But as events become besieged by complications, she realises that the version of her life that she’s clung to is not necessarily the reality, and the reappraisal of her past raises some uncomfortable truths.

The Story of Crass

By George Berger

Published September 2008 by Omnibus Press

£9.95, paperback

Not just another iconoclastic band, Crass was a musical, social and political phenomenon. The band members were rarely photographed commune-dwellers who remained contemptuous of conventional pop stardom and exhausted the possibilities of punk-led anarchy. They have at last collaborated on telling the whole Crass story, giving access to many never-before seen photos and interviews.

A Pure Drop: The Life of Jeff Buckley

By Jeff Apter

Published September 2008 by Omnibus Press

£19.95, hardback

During his thirty years, Jeff Scott Buckley lived many lives: suburban loner, music school misfit, rock and roll gypsy. His real life was only revealed after his tragic death, 10 years ago in the Mississippi river, hours before he was due to start rehearsals for the follow up album to Grace.

The book explores his ongoing battles with the concept of stardom, his desire for escape and the attempts to deal with the unavoidable legacy of his equally gifted father, Tim Buckley.

Chasing the Eighties

By Spencer Austin

Published 5th September by Know The Score Books

£9.99, paperback

Chasing the Eighties is the tale of a man teetering precariously on the brink of thirty, desperately obsessed with 1980’s nostalgia. It’s a journey under the skin of what the eighties mean to not only those who grew up in them, but those from other generations who’ve likewise been snared by the Goonies, Ghostbusters and Guttenberg.

Both are twelve years old, both are orphans; Kibwe’s parents killed in the name of war and Zuberi’s in the name of trade. Kibwe is a boy and Zuberi a gorilla. They are on the run: Kibwe, from the horrors he has committed as a child soldier, and Zuberi, from the violent hand of man. Gavin Menzies, bestselling author of 1421: The Year China Discovered the World, offers a stunning reappraisal of history, presenting compelling new evidence on the European Renaissance, tracing its roots to the Chinese. Based on years of research, Menzies argues that a Chinese fleet arrived in Tuscany in 1434, where they met Pope Eugenius IV in Florence, presenting him with a wealth of knowledge over the following months – and it was this knowledge that sparked the inventiveness of the Renaissance.

Slayer is much more than one of the world’s biggest metal bands – they are a phenomenon. After 25 years of uncompromising albums and a stage show that takes live aggression to its limit, the LA foursome have retained the respect of their critics and peers like no other contemporary band. This biography explains how through their career they have extended the bound of thrash metal, providing impetus for the extreme metal wave that rose in their wake.

Jane Haynes doesn't keep from us her own story - her strange childhood with its enfolded and sequential mysteries - and she explains how the process of psychotherapy has worked for her. I recommend it to anyone concerned with the life of the imagination and the healing arts." Taken from the Foreword by Hilary Mantel

Jane Haynes is interested in the practice of psychotherapy as the expression of a therapeutic dialogue. She works from the precept that not only do people have unspeakable experiences, or thoughts, but these can be made more unspeakable by the absence of a trained listener. The book includes a parallel account of a patient's experience of therapy.

www.janehaynes-ebook.com

A ruthless killer. A damaged FBI profiler. Separated by two continents but locked in a deadly game.

As Italian cops discover the body of a young woman – her remains mutilated like BRK’s victims – a gruesome package arrives at the FBI, twin events that conspire to lure the profiler back into the hunt.

The Mark

By Jason Pinter

Published 16th May 2008 by Mira

£6.99 (Paperback)

Right as I was about to die, I realized that none of the myths about death were true. There was no white light at the end of a tunnel. There were no singing angels, no thousand virgins, and my soul didn’t hover and admire my body from above. I was only aware of one thing, and that was how much I wanted to live…

Henry Porter is a 24 year old rookie journalist living out his dream working for a New York newspaper. Life couldn’t be sweeter. But soon reality cuts in and Henry realises the big stories are still somewhat out of his reach, and he’s there to do the fillers and the obituaries and not much more. But when he’s involved in a story which leads him to the apartment of ex-con Luis Guzman, he finds the most appalling scene. Before he knows what’s happening, he’s left at a crime scene, holding a smoking gun. From thereon in he’s on the run, aided by only one unsuspecting ally, and trying to work out how he’s now a wanted man by the NYPD, the FBI and the Mob.

New features at The London Book Fair 2008

The London Book Fair 2008 is set to be a truly world-class event with a host of new initiatives and increasing participation, both exhibitor and visitor.

This year the Fair will feature 1,550 exhibitors from 62 countries. 58% of exhibitors will come from overseas, with attendance rising particularly steeply from Eastern European countries. The Fair is set to see significant growth in international presence, with a 15% increase in international space sold.

There will be new international pavilions from Romania and Russia who are participating for the first time. Organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute, the Romanian pavilion will represent 25 of the country’s most prominent publishers and complement the increasingly-visible presence of Romanian authors in the international book market. Offering a comprehensive view of the Romanian publishing sector, the stand will present programmes run by the National Book Centre of the Romanian Cultural Institute.

The new Russian pavilion, organised by Academia Rossica, will showcase 14 Russian publishers presenting leading books and authors. The stand will include a dedicated seminar zone, hosting a series of discussions, presentations and launches. The pavilion aims to help Russian publishers integrate into the international publishing community and will be part of a larger programme: Russian Literature Week in London.

The Portuguese Association of Publishers and Booksellers (APEL) will participate at the Fair for the first time sharing a pavilion with Platano Editora, one of Portugal’s largest publishing houses. The Turkish Ministry of Turkish Culture will have a big presence and a host of new Italian exhibitors will feature, including Milan and Atlantyca in the Children’s sector and Italian art publishers Treccani and Scala. The Arab World will be the Market Focus for 2008, and a host of seminars and events will highlight the trade links with this territory, its publishing industry and the opportunities for conducting business with the rest of the world

There will be a new entrance at Earls Court Two and a number of features within the hall. For the first time the Fair will host The Gourmand/London Book Fair Cook Book Corner in association with The Gourmand World Cook Book Awards. A variety of international chefs will give cookery demonstrations and sign copies of their latest books. Once again the Fair will host the popular Author of the Day initiative, this year bestselling authors Sebastian Faulks, Alaa Al Alswany and Francesca Simon will be featured. A host of authors will be showcased in a new English PEN Literary Café throughout the event. The Café will offer visitors the opportunity to sit down, relax and enjoy listening to their favourite author.

The London Book Fair 2008 will feature a variety of new events and established favourites. Following exhibitor and visitor research, the 2008 seminar programme will focus on three key areas: digitisation, children’s books & publishing and film and TV. A new American Independent Bookseller programme will also take place this year which will enable 25 independent US booksellers to visit London for a week during the Fair.

New for 2008, The London Book Fair will be producing podcast interviews that will be available to download from the website. There will be audio podcast interviews with three key members of the industry that talk about each of the areas that the seminar programme will be focusing on this year: Julian Friedmann from Blake Friedmann Literary, TV and Film Agency for Film & TV; Viv Bird, Director Booktrust for Children’s Books & Publishing; Francis Bennett, Chairman Ehaus talking about Digitisation. In addition to these there will be video podcasts of each of the authors taking part in the Author of the Day programme.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s Speech for Outstanding achievement award for JK Rowling

"Good evening. I’m very privileged to present tonight’s award for Outstanding Achievement to a very special author, and someone Sarah and I are lucky enough to call a friend – Jo Rowling.

Jo’s books have touched people young and old. She has joined a distinguished line of British authors whose work has got the whole country reading, and whose books will be read for many years to come by successive generations.

That alone is worthy of an award, because we all know reading is the gateway to learning and fulfillment for every generation.

But she has been more than just a very popular and successful writer. She has always sought to use her success to improve the lives of others.

She has been incredibly generous with her time and her money supporting some of the UK’s most deserving charities, but always in a quiet way.

And Sarah and I have been particularly grateful for the help she has given to the charities which we support.

So on this special night, we wish you the greatest congratulations Jo – we wish you all the best for your future projects, and we hope to see you soon to say well done in person."
