The Secret Mandarin / Avon publishes first historical novel
20th August 2009
Avon - the mass market imprint of publisher HarperCollins - is to make a move into historical fiction for the first time this September.
The Secret Mandarin by Sara Sheridan follows the story of real-life botanist Robert Fortune, who introduced tea plants to India from China in the 1800s. Travelling with his sister-in-law, Fortune's true mission - as a spy for Britain - is soon uncovered and the pair are forced to disguise themselves as a Mandarin and manservant.
Avon currently publishes commercial fiction, crime fiction and contemporary romantic fiction. The imprint will publish a second historical novel by Sheridan next year, entitled The Arabian Knight.
