19th October 2010

Stanley Hauerwas, one of the greatest Christian minds of our time and named by Time Magazine in 2001 as ''America's best theologian'' is taking part in a number of high profile events in London for the UK launch of his autobiography Hannah's Child this October.

Death is the great contemporary taboo as well as the great universal. Life must be prolonged at any cost, and some say the new temples in our cities are the great hospitals. But have we lost the art of dying well? And if we found it, how would it change the way we live? Join leading ethical and religious mind Stanley Hauerwas in a public debate on Death and Assisted Suicide with Sr Frances Dominica, founder of the children's hospice movement.  Following the debate there will be a book signing where people can get copies of Stanley's new autobiography Hannah's Child signed.

St Paul's Cathedral:  Public Debate on Death and Assisted Suicide (All welcome)
19 Oct 2010 6:30pm - 8pm.
Admission is free and unticketed, doors open at 6.00pm.
Stanley Hauerwas, Professor of Theological Ethics, Duke Divinity School will debate with Sr Frances Dominica, founder of the children's hospice movement.

Hauerwas is a contrarian critic of America's moral life, using his current post as the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke Divinity School to make Christian ethics more accessible and relevant to society.  An outspoken Christian pacifist, he is an expert on just war theory and an opponent to American Patriotism. Hauerwas is a staunch critic of America's "War on Terror" and remains decidedly pessimistic not only about American prospects, but also American morality. In 2001 he was asked to give the Gifford Lectures at St. Andrews University which are among the most prestigious lectures that philosophers and theologians can give.
