Wales Book of the Year 2009 Shortlists Announced

The shortlists for The Wales Book of the Year 2009 - the premier award for Welsh writing - were announced today, Monday 25 May, at the Guardian Hay Festival in the presence of Jane Hutt, Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills.
The awards, worth £10,000 to the winners, are presented to the best books of the year in the English and Welsh language.
From a longlist which included some of Wales's best known writers, Deborah Kay Davies with her first collection of short stories and poet Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch have been shortlisted alongside award-winning fiction writer Gee Williams.
The shortlist is:
- Deborah Kay Davies, Grace, Tamar and Laszlo the Beautiful (Parthian)
- Gee Williams, Blood etc (Parthian)
- Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch, Not in these shoes (Picador Poetry)
The 2009 English-language judges are poet, critic and lecturer at the University of Wales, Tiffany Atkinson; poet, essayist and former editor of Planet, John Barnie and broadcaster and travel writer Mike Parker (Chair).
