Lauren Child to design Books Are My Bag children’s bag

LAUREN CHILD’S HUGELY POPULAR CHARACTERS, CHARLIE AND LOLA, TO FEATURE ON BOOKS ARE MY BAG CHILDREN’S BAG

Child publishes long-awaited new Charlie and Lola book: Charlie and Lola: One Thing, releasing on October 1

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator, Lauren Child, has lent her support to the Books Are My Bag campaign, and will be designing a new BAMB bag for children featuring her much loved fictional characters, Charlie and Lola.

Around 20,000 children’s bags will be available from bookshops across UK and Ireland from October 8 – the same day that Lauren will release her new book, Charlie and Lola: One Thing (Orchard Books) which sees the return of the hugely popular characters after six years.

Lauren said: “I am delighted to be part of the Books Are My Bag campaign, especially on the publication of Charlie and Lola: One Thing; partly because I can never go to a bookshop for just one thing, but more importantly because just one bookshop can inspire a squillion imaginations.

I have been lucky enough to receive fantastic support from booksellers during the 15 years of Charlie and Lola, and it’s wonderful that there’s a yearly campaign to celebrate their passion for getting children reading. My local bookshop is Primrose Hill Books, and my nearest children’s bookshop is The Children’s Bookshop, Muswell Hill.  Both give excellent advice and have a lovely selection.”

Books Are My Bag aims to highlight the important role bookshops play in inspiring the next generation of children to read, from supporting children’s literacy campaigns to promoting reading for pleasure. Recent research from the National Literary Trust shows that reading for pleasure not only affects educational attainment, but also the development of empathy and increased social mobility.

Hilary Murray Hill, Hachette Children’s Group CEO, said: “We are thrilled to support the Books Are My Bag campaign with a children’s bag– it’s great to able to celebrate the vital role of bricks-and-mortar bookshops in the children’s market, and in particular the enthusiastic 15 year advocacy from booksellers of Lauren Child’s Charlie and Lola.”

Tim Godfray, CEO of Booksellers Association and BAMB spokesperson, said: “We are delighted to have the extremely talented Lauren Child supporting Books Are My Bag this year and can’t wait to see the design. Charlie and Lola will make fabulous children’s BAMBassadors, helping to spread the love of books and bookshops to children and parents far and wide.”

Lauren Child’s One Thing tour takes place between October 1- 8, and will include independent bookshops such as SilverDell and Simply Books, as well as Waterstones stores.
