IglooBooks signs deal with DreamWorks to develop, distribute and sell books in UK linked to major Hollywood films

Independent publisher IglooBooks has signed a deal with DreamWorks Animation Publishing Group to develop, distribute and sell books in the UK linked to major Hollywood films.

John Styring, chief executive of IglooBooks, which is based in converted farm buildings in Northamptonshire and has 120 employees, said: ‘They came from LA and went into mass market retailers and saw our books. They were looking for somebody go-getting, entrepreneurial and nimble.’

Under the agreement, which will include colouring and activity books, story books, novelty and eBook formats, IglooBooks’ first launch will be a series of titles based on Penguins Of Madagascar.

Next year it will publish and distribute print books and eBooks for Kung Fu Panda, Shrek and The Croods. Styring said: ‘We have an agreement that runs until at least 2017, and it is not just for blockbuster films.’

He said he co-founded IglooBooks in 2003 because after working for publishers including Penguin he felt he could do it himself.

IglooBooks’ adult and children’s books are now published in 33 languages and sold in 55 countries.

The company has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the international trade category and the Bookseller Independent Publisher of the Year.

Styring added: ‘There is always an appetite for a good interactive children’s book and that has allowed people like us in.

‘We are the fastest growing privately-owned publishers. In 2006, our turnover was £1.6 million, now it’s £30 million.’
