‘A great success!’ / Crowds flock to the first Chiswick Book Festival
Over the weekend of 25th-27th September, Chiswick welcomed a host of literary stars for the first Chiswick Book Festival. Readers of all ages filled festival venues around leafy Chiswick, and fans queued down the streets to see their favourite authors – including Jacqueline Wilson, Lady Antonia Fraser, Anthony Horowitz, Michael Frayn, Michelle Paver and Katie Fforde. Actor Sir Ian McKellen and artist Sir Peter Blake also took part.
Chiswick is home to numerous authors and publishers, and the Chiswick Book Festival buzzed with a friendly, community atmosphere. Funds raised by the festival will be donated to local charities involved with reading, literacy and the arts. The Festival was supported by Savills, Chiswick Library, Hounslow and Ealing Councils as well as local bookshops.
Torin Douglas, the Festival’s director, says, ‘Every event was sold out – the first Chiswick Book Festival has been a great success! With such a strong literary heritage in Chiswick, it’s wonderful to see the whole community supporting and enjoying this ambitious venture.’
Events at the festival ranged from a morning of children’s events to historical fiction, romantic novels and film and television screenplays. Popular crime fiction featured in a special debate, along with audiobooks, architecture and travel. A creative writing course took place for budding authors, sponsored by AuthorHouse UK Ltd.
