The nation’s rudest comic celebrates its 30th Birthday
A publishing phenomenon and comedy institution, Viz has kept the world laughing with its surreal humour through a cast of mischievous characters and crude jokes over the decades. Viz is published by Dennis Publishing, one of the world’s leading independent publishers.
Midas Public Relations created a targeted publicity campaign to raise public awareness of not only the 30th Anniversary of Viz but also the publication of Roger’s Profanisaurus: The Magna Fartlet and the Viz annual Council Gritter; looking to profile build the Viz brand through press coverage, thus raising sales for the forthcoming titles and special, 30th Anniversary issue of the comic.
Results: Working closely with Dennis Publishing and the creators of the comic, Midas masterminded a bespoke PR campaign launching with a teaser news story over the summer announcing the Viz account win to the book trade; this story was immediately picked up by The Bookseller and PR Week.
Capitalising on the news element of Viz’s 30th Anniversary, Midas generated blanket coverage in the national newspaper press and all their websites, with hard coverage across The Times, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph and The Independent – interviews with the creators, news stories, extracts and artwork. In addition The Sun, Daily Mirror, Evening Standard, Metro, Daily Sport Sunday and Sunday Sport all ran extracts, bespoke Viz artwork and news stories.
A broad range of different media press coverage was secured and ran throughout October – December celebrating the Anniversary and highlighting the forthcoming publications including a front cover feature in The Big Issue and pieces in Design Week, Front, Record Collector and, Bizarre. The week of the Anniversary Sky News travelled to Newcastle to interview Viz at their HQ, this was ticker taped on Sky throughout the day; Midas placed a story of BBC News – leading to More 4 following suit with a news story and interviews on national radio. In addition to the broadcast coverage Midas worked closely with Dennis Publishing in organising and handling the PR for the successful Viz 30th Anniversary party at The Cartoon Museum and the subsequent after party nearby. Both parties were full to capacity with high profile journalists, illustrators, media faces and radio and TV presenters. Book signing events were also organised in London and Newcastle Waterstone’s & HMV. Each event was received well with pre-listings across listing press and an excellent turnout of new and old Viz fans buying books.
